A very good bass for a little money. by Richard Cleary I first played this instrument a few years ago, but the name and price cachet of other instruments made me pass at the time.
Fast forward a few years. I now have 9 or 10 basses including Warwicks, Gibsons, and Ibanezes. I have had a Tobias,a Sting Ray, and a Marcus Miller J. A couple of years ago, I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, so I gradually had to transition over to lighter instruments so I could still gig and stand for long periods of time. Although I love my Warwicks and Ibanezes, I remembered how nice the T24 sounded and how it was nice and light especially compared to my bubinga Warwick fretless.
I was surfing ebay late one night when I found a dealer who had B-stock T-24's for $255.00. I bought one and I have to tell you the fond memories of my earlier encounter with this bass were quite accurate.
For a "cheap" Vietnamese instrument, this bass is very well-made. Fit and finish rival my $1000-2000 basses. It's an all mahogany neck-thru with maple stringers and two passive j style pickups. These pickups have a real decent "growl" which rival my Warwick.
The instrument sounds a little more live than the Warwick and a little less "woody", but overall its voice is quite unique and very pleasing. The controls are very rudimentary (one volume and one tone per pickup, and no blend or master volume.) I was going to install an active eq, but the instrument sounds great as is and if I want a preamp I will probably use an external one such as a Bass DI or similar.
The neck is great. I like the feel of natural wood on my left thumb and hand. The T24 has one of the better satin urethane finishes I have experienced and the neck is very smooth and fast with a fantastic organic "feel" that rivals a good prepared bare wood neck. The shape is similar to Ibanez's thin theck, but a little thicker and wider. My arthritic old hands love this neck. Out of the box, it needed a little more relief to get rid of some string buzz, and it also needed intonation. These things took about an hour, but any self-respecting musician should teach themselves how to do these things. Very easy to play, this bass has excellent balance and is light. I have done several multi-hour gigs with the T24, and it's easy on your back.
All in all, a very good bass for the money. Better in looks and sound than nearly anything else within $200 of it and hands down a bona fide bargain.
It's my opinion that in 20 years instruments made in the Far East will be collector instruments. This bass will be one of them. | Add Your Comments: | |
